The Original WLAY

A message from Bobby Tomberlin:

I worked at [the WLAY] radio station in Muscle Shoals for a couple of years before moving to Nashville. Sam Phillips of Sun Records worked here in his early years. Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs and other artists performed live in these studios. With the establishment of Rick Hall’s FAME Studios, WLAY would often play recordings as they were completed at the legendary studio. The WLAY audience would frequently choose the “single” by artists such as Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Clarence Carter, and several others to be shipped nationwide after having heard the entire, completed session on the air. I played several of Shenendoah’s future hits for the first time including “Sunday In The South” and “Church On Cumberland Road”.

Thanks for taking the time to read this note….
My name is Phil Bytheway (yes that is my last name – it’s Welsh) and I have a passion for radio/TV station stickers (bumper, window, window cling, phone and mailing labels). I have a collection of over 50,000 and am wondering if your station (or sister stations) has any stickers available at this time?
If you already sent something and don’t have anything new, please disregard this request.
I also trade with around 5 folks around the World. In addition to stickers, I collect station magnets, keychains and pins.
If your station has any of these items (old or new), would it be possible to send some my way (for stickers, more than one for the folks I trade with would be nice… but ONE is better than NONE!) I’m hoping to get one of each type from every station in the US and Canada. My collection was once featured in a Radio World article.
If I have any stickers in my collection you are interested in, I would be willing to send extras or scans in exchange.
Or, if you prefer, I can send a Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope (SASE) to help out. Just let me know what size, postage and an address and I’ll get it to you right away. I could send a donation to help out. Just let me know how.
I am also interested in receiving a sticker from all of your affiliates (sister stations), if that is possible.
I have retired from an Electrical Engineering career and volunteered at our local Classical music station KING-FM. I also occasionally volunteer at the Museum of Flight here in Seattle.
When I was in college, I did news for KCMU-90.5 during the summer.
My other hobby is tuning the AM band for stations (DXing). I have heard over 2000 stations from around the world. I hope to get a promo item from every station I’ve heard!
I publish a newsletter for radio/TV promo collectors, DecalcoMania, 10 times/year. Sample upon request.
I also publish an on-line newsletter, DX Monitor, 35 times/year, for the International Radio Club of America (IRCA) focusing on listening for distant AM stations (DXing). Sample upon request.
    My mailing address is:

Thank you for your time… I KNOW you’re busy
    God Bless…

PS: If you are the wrong person to send this to, please forward it to the correct person… thanks.
PS: If your station is part of a large network of stations, I would like to know how to receive a sticker from every frequency.
PS: If your AM station will be doing any overnight testing, let me know and I will get you in touch with the IRCA test coordinator
PS: I’m a logo nut… having designed the “W” on the University of Washington Husky football helmet.

    GREAT LOGO!!!
