WLAY

A message from Bobby Tomberlin:

I worked at [the WLAY] radio station in Muscle Shoals for a couple of years before moving to Nashville. Sam Phillips of Sun Records worked here in his early years. Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs and other artists performed live in these studios. With the establishment of Rick Hall’s FAME Studios, WLAY would often play recordings as they were completed at the legendary studio. The WLAY audience would frequently choose the “single” by artists such as Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Clarence Carter, and several others to be shipped nationwide after having heard the entire, completed session on the air. I played several of Shenendoah’s future hits for the first time including “Sunday In The South” and “Church On Cumberland Road”.
